Buying a new desktop computer is an exciting thing, but sometimes you feel limited by the selection. Maybe you want the monitor of one, the processor of another, and the graphics card of yet a third. It may seem like your only options are the ones put together for you, but it's not true. You can buy online computer parts and put your own computer together. It may seem like rocket science but it's actually quite easy.

First of all, you need to make sure you have one of everything that you need with online computer parts, so make a check list. The most basic piece is the tower case. You need someone to hold everything together and make it a working system. You'll also need a processor, motherboard, hard drive, graphics card, a fan to cool your computer and a CD or DVD drive. Each of these pieces can be custom to whatever specification you'd like. So if you are eying those IBM hard drives but want ATI graphics cards, that's perfectly fine.

Your case will have slots for your online computer parts and it's easy to see where everything goes. But, if you have any doubts, you can find images online that will guide you. Make sure before you touch a single item that you ground yourself. Basically you want to make sure you don't have an electrical charge that could ruin your components. A static shock can completely fry a motherboard. Before working, touch other metal to ground yourself and get rid of that static.

To open your case, you'll just need a screwdriver, usually a Phillips. Then you'll be able to remove one side of the case. You'll see a ton of lose wires on the inside that will plug into each component. Make sure you clean the case and the components of any dust with an air canister. This is a gentle way of spraying dust away that won't ruin anything.

After your case is set up, you need a few other parts. Namely your monitor, mouse, keyboard and speakers. For most computer users, a 17 inch monitor is a good standard size for everyday use. If you are looking to use it for gaming or graphic design, you might want to invest in something bigger. Luckily monitors have become very affordable over the years.

Once your new rig is built, there tends to be a geeky custom of naming it something cool. After all, you put all your sweat and hard work into building it out of all these online computer parts and it is one of a kind, so it should get a unique name. Boot it up, make sure you have an operating system ready to install and you are all set!
