One would think with all the bells and whistles these days, that there aren't any cheap digital cameras left available on the market today. It's a relief to say that is far from true. You can still find a good quality cheap digital camera to fit your needs.
When browsing for your camera, you should probably start with a basic point-and-shoot. These digital cameras perform the basic functions. They don't require any special camera optics, camera lenses or accessories. The flash is built-in and its use can be pre-set in the menu. They are also the absolute easiest to use. Depending on the brand you will notice differences in zoom, focus, and rendering settings but overall there isn't anything particularly difficult about using them.
You may hear a lot of talk about shutter speed and megapixels. In complete honesty, most decent digital cameras on the market today can give you high-definition photo quality. Anything around 6MP should provide fairly detailed photo results. There is absolutely no need to go crazy and buy something way too expensive just because it offers a lot of nonsense. Unless you plan on blowing up the picture to make building long banners then an average megapixel count will give you good 4x6 shots.
As for shutter speed, if you're looking at point and shoot cameras you're probably not going to be all that concerned with the rate at which your camera captures the photos. For family gatherings, school events, and assorted other everyday life photo opportunities, you don't need a professional camera to get the job done. Shutter speed is used more in journalism, professional photography and hard-to-capture moving object scenarios. Many cheap digital cameras will offer an alternative motion capture feature, though, that can take multiple shots in succession.
The same deal goes for camera lenses and camera and optic features. There are plenty of accessories available for a cheap digital camera that won't cost you an arm and a leg. While most of the complicated camera lenses are used on DSLRs, there are a fair range of zoom and telephoto lenses available as attachments for average to cheap digital cameras. You need to know the make and model of your camera to determine which accessory will fit it but many are made to fit multiple models so if you replace your camera the lens, optic, or accessory is still usable. It's a consideration for you even if it's not really a necessity in terms of overall enjoyment or productivity. Your digital camera is just fine without any extra pieces.
So, when looking for a digital camera don't be fooled into buying something unnecessarily expensive. You can get good quality photography out of a simple point-and-shoot digital camera. They are great for personal use.
