While most of the complicated camera lenses are used on DSLRs, there are a fair range of zoom and telephoto lenses available as attachments for average to cheap digital cameras. You need to know the make and model of your camera to determine which accessory will fit it but many are made to fit multiple models so if you replace your camera the lens, optic, or accessory is still usable. It's a consideration for you even if it's not really a necessity in terms of overall enjoyment or productivity. Your digital camera is just fine without any extra pieces.

So, when looking for a digital camera don't be fooled into buying something unnecessarily expensive. You can get good quality photography out of a simple point-and-shoot digital camera. They are great for personal use.
