Everyone has always told me to take care of my feet. It always seemed like silly advice. Take care of my feet? As appose to all those other parts of my body I might happily discard or burn and scratch for fun? What an absurd statement. I will happily "take care" of all of my body , thank you very much. But then you spend a few years running around school yards and the "touch football field" that is your block growing up. You wear shoes because they are cool even though their thin soles and narrow design are ravaging your feet. You trip, step on stuff, wear shoes without socks. Eventually you realize you should have taken care of your feet.
Luckily if you have reached a point of discomfort with your feet there are many different kinds of orthopedic shoes that can help correct for or at least stabilize from your youthful podiatric misdeeds. Since I went to a podiatrist I have become a big fan of orthopedic shoes and orthotic sandals. When I purchase footwear I no longer consider how hip my kicks are going to look but now what kind of arch supports I can fit inside them. These considerations will also help correct for the supination of my foot. For those who do not know supination is what many refer to as being "bow-legged" with weight support primarily the anterior of the feet. (Conversely these orthopedic shoes can also help those having problems with pronation, the opposite of supination.)
I am not writing to complain about my feet woes, though I am certain it may feel that way. Instead I am simply here to point out things we can all do to help ourselves in this oft troubled area of our medical health. Foot problems are no laughing matter. We need our feet and become very accustomed to them doing a lot of our heavy life lifting.
I am glad that through these orthopedic shoes and new arch supports I have figured out ways to better serve my feet. They have honestly served me well in spite of all the pain I have put them, and by proxy myself through. You will never again catch me going harder on my feet than they can handle. You will also never catch me choosing style over comfort and health in any way. These lessons were worth learning. Wish it could have come easier though.
