Music makes the world go round and it's a big part of most people's lives. It's even better when you get to take it on the go, or want to quietly enjoy it at work. But the kind of experience you get isn't just about how good of a play list you have, but whether or not you have quality headphones. You need to be able to hear every note from the bass guitar, ever nuance in the melody to really get the full effect. Picking headphones is all about what works best for you.

The first thing you have to consider is whether you want big or small. Some people don't like the really big over the head headphones, usually for aesthetic reasons. They prefer something small that fits into the ears and is less noticeable. Some people also find more comfort in smaller headphones than larger ones.

If you decide on small, the most common type of headphones are ear buds. They are the ones that come with all MP3 players for free, but those tend to be cheap and easily break. If you want quality headphones, you'll want to look into upgrading into other ear buds. Check for cushioning as that is going to be really important. Ear buds without enough cushion are going to hurt and can even scratch the inside of your ears which are very sensitive.

Sports headphones are a great choice for those who want to listen to music while working out. They fit in like ear buds but go around the back of the head and can be adjusted for a more secure fit, so they won't budge even when you are going for a run. They can be a little pricey but are worth it if you don't want the hassle of your headphones popping out of your ears at the gym.

Ear pad headphones are the over the head, padded headphones that rest on your ears. They are well suited for portable use. When looking for quality headphones in this category, check for noise canceling headphones. They not only will cancel out the noise around you, but often keep your music from disturbing others. Also look for models that fit your head well, as this can sometimes be tricky with the band. If you plan on using it for portable means, many new models can fold so they fit better in a bag.

The last choice of quality headphones are full sized headphones, also known as full-cup headphones. These full cup the ear within the cushioning and are often the best you can get for perfect sound quality. They aren't very portable though and are best used at home. DJ headphones are often in this category, as they are made for studio and DJ use so you'd need the best sound you can get.

No matter what headphones you pick, it's all about your preference and comfort. While ear buds may work for you they may not work well for the next person. Give them a try if you can in store, look up reviews, and do your research until you are confident in your choice.
