Living abroad is not for the faint of heart. You really have to love adventure and be willing to have new experiences. There are a few main avenues to take as far as how to get there, but before we start, let's talk preliminaries.

1. Climate Control Storage: Chances are you're not going to be living abroad for the rest of your life. If you think you'll return your best option is to put your stuff in climate control storage. That way when you come back it will be safe and ready. You could also sell it, give it away or let your family hold on to your possessions in the meanwhile.

2. Work Papers: If you aren't living abroad with the aid of the government or as a full time employee, it really helps if you can have citizenship in one of the countries you're thinking about living in. This applies specifically to the Euro Zone, or any of the former British colonies; if you have citizenship in one of these countries you're free to live in others. This will help you from just being a tourist.

3. Work: If you want the experience of living abroad without the struggle of serious work, apply for a work permit. Do so before you leave, since if it gets rejected, you could be out of luck. Make sure your CV, which is more personal than a resume, is updated and focused on all of your education.

4. Visit First: If you're thinking about moving to a new country based on what you've heard, think again. Travel opens your mind and changes your preconceived notions. So if you're thinking about living somewhere you need more than good research - you need at least some firsthand experience.Student: This is the easiest way to travel abroad. International Programs and Study Abroad programs are great - they're easy to apply for and the institution takes care of all the technicalities. Usually, however, it's for no longer than a year.

Government: Temporary Duty abroad allows you housing and per diem rates that are boons to the weary traveler. You could also become a diplomat, which although it may be challenging, is another great way to live abroad for an extended period of time.

Full Time Employee: Asking around in your company to see if there are any ways to obtain a position overseas is a good way to get started. Jump In: Just booking a flight and going to figure it out when you get there may be the hardest way to become an expat, but it is probably also the most valuable.

No matter what you do, becoming an expatriate is a life-changing experience that if you're thinking of pursuing you should act on. You won't regret it.
