I will never forget the first time that I was truly put off by the décor of a restaurant. It was one of my first business lunches. Fresh out of college, I thought this is what my life would be like from now on, going to fancy restaurants with verbs for names, eating from the lap of luxury on the company dime. When I arrived I was immediately put off by the deafening oomph of the bass heavy club music playing. This was not the kind of music I wanted to hear while chewing my pad thai.
Even the horrendous and offensive music could not prepare me for the restaurant furniture. The restaurant chairs were shaped in a way that seemed to defy logic. No human back has ever arched in accordance with these designs and let me come out publicly as saying that I hope "evolution" never goes in this contortionist direction. Some simple aluminum chairs might have done the trick, but instead this restaurant decided to step outside of the box. Sometimes the decision to step outside of the box can be applauded but when redesigning something as innocuous as a chair perhaps the classic model is the way to go.
The restaurant tables were only ever so slightly better. They were a very modern design as well. Cylindrical to the point of keeping our legs from being easily tucked away underneath; we found ourselves stretching and hunching over our food just to keep from having an embarrassing pile of specially spiced chicken and basil on your nicest pair of pants.
The food at this place was admittedly delicious and the service was courteous and speedy, honestly if not for terrible decision making in the restaurant furniture department this whole place could have been great. But honestly if you are going to make such an effort on restaurant furniture, at least make sure the stuff is functional. A restaurant is judged just as much on its relative comfort as compared to others as it is on its food. Vibe matters when you open up a place like this and when you step out of the norm you open yourself up to even more scrutiny.
So I suppose the ultimate point here is go practical or go home. Restaurant furniture shouldn't be some over thought element to your business. It should be practical and nice to look at. Restaurant tables should make a lot of room for eating but even more space to fill your space with more tables. Restaurant chairs should be comfortable but also lightweight for easy readjustment to the layout. No one needs their chairs to be art. They just want good food and a good time.
