If you keep the same decor all year round, you might notice that during certain seasons, things feel a little… off. Say you have very balmy, summery decorations and colors all over your house. By the time winter rolls around, you should have been integrating darker, warmer colors and more lighting into your decor.

Many people don't realize that different seasons call for different decors, but there's a big difference between summer-appropriate and winter-appropriate decorations and furniture, especially in areas where the seasonal changes are particularly striking. Here are some tips on how to transition through the seasons throughout the year.

In warmer months, take advantage of the natural light. The days are longer, so it gets dark later and gets light out earlier. You can still use lamps and overhead lights, of course, but use them sparingly. Put up gauzy or sheer curtains so the sun will be able to shine through. In the late fall and winter, as the days grow progressively shorter and it's darker out longer, feel free to use lamps and candles. If you have a fireplace, you don't have to use it just for warmth — use it for light, as well.

In the spring and summer, accent your home with pastels or tropical colors that will brighten the room without taking away from the natural beauty outside. In the fall and winter, swap them out with deeper, richer yellows, oranges and reds that will match the falling leaves and also get you ready for the icy whites and grays winter will bring. Also, drape blankets and throws over your sofas and loveseats — it's an easy way to add color and keep toasty.

Speaking of sofas and loveseats, don't think you need to switch them out when the snow starts falling (or melting). Just choose furniture that works in both the winter and the summer. Neutral colors are your best bet — go with a rich chocolate or mahogany color. The light colors of spring and summer will match it well, as will the deeper hues of winter and fall. (Also, make sure the coffee or end tables are within reach of each seat, so people will have a place to set their lemonade or hot cocoa.)

Plants are a great way to signify the changing of the seasons. In the spring and summer, fill your home with flowers. In the fall, go with gourds and bundles of colorful foliage. In the winter, try some poinsettias and holly.

Switch out your wall accents and other home accessories that lean toward one season or the other. Some will look fine no matter what season it is; just use your better judgment.

With these ideas you'll be able to make your home look beautiful, no matter what time of year it is. Keep them in mind as the seasons change and you'll keep a happy home all year round.
