Coin collecting seems like a great way to teach a child about the value of a buck and the history of the economy. There are so many ins and outs in the coin collecting game that a child who becomes truly engaged with a coin collection is sure to be savvy and well rounded as he grows up. Coin collecting has a lot of great things to teach.

There is the organizational aspect of coin collecting. Finding the best way to display and order your various coins is great for spatial development and your child's sense of order in the world. The nature of currency suggests that a coin collection could lead your child to a better sense of math, and also of the larger economy. An interest in foreign currency is helpful in developing an exploratory spirit in a young coin collecting boy or girl. The mixes of images and icons gives them a sense of history on a global scale and teaches how one small thing can be an integral part of a gigantic thing, like a global much-layered economy.

If education isn't enough of a motivator there is always just plain fun to motivate your encouragement of your son or daughter's coin collecting habit. As a boy I remember getting very excited to fill the slots on my coin album. It was perfectly laid out and displayed on my dresser. Each morning I would flip through my Dansco coin albums and check that all my favorite coins were safe. Each night I would check them again. It was a passion and I'm so glad I had it.

Another reason I am glad my parents encouraged my coin collecting is pretty simple. I got to go to Europe!! All those years of collecting coins sort of drifted away during high school. Between football practice and my new band I forgot about the joy I found in those coins. When girls entered the picture I could barely be bothered with currency at all unless it was to take someone out on a date. As high school ended I thought about how I would spend the summer between college. There were lots of fun options but the funnest definitely seemed like a cross European tour. My coin collection paid for my plane tickets and lodging in several cities.

So a coin collection for kids can be a great investment in their future in every possible way.
