In the past several years, as the US economy has slipped into a recession, or depression (depending on who you ask, but only history will tell us in a few decades), many people have been feeling the grunt of rising prices in pretty much every aspect of daily life. From gas prices to bread, all of the day to day products have experienced an increase in price. For many major retailers, this period marked the end of their time. Companies like Tower Records, Circuit City and several other major brands were left to announce giant closeout sales that would end their huge inventory. They still made a profit during those crazy sale days but had to shut down their business eventually. But the concept of a closeout sale has been around for decades, and has always fascinated the crowds.

It seems to reason that these sales can be used as a marketing tool just like the seasonal sales that we see every end of season. But how will the consumer approach a closeout sale and what exactly would that mean to the brand's extended presence? This is where the online world of shopping changes the game. Online shopping has caused many changes to the retail world, and is continuing to do so every single day as more companies take their business online. In fact, many store owners are now faced with a critical choice to make when they wish to expand their brand - Do we focus our attention to building an online store which would cost us much less to maintain, or do we continue to rent property and create a new store?

This question is relevant now more than ever, as consumer report indicate that the majority of sales is quickly shifting toward the virtual world. New websites are able to scour the Internet in search of closeout sales and closeout products and then combine them all into one location (their website), thus allowing the consumer to be at dozens of closeout sales from around the country at once, while still sitting in their homes. This is a game changer not only because it saves consumers time and money, but also because the concept of having a closeout sale is no longer limited to the brand's demise.

Closeout online could actually just be a synonym for extreme sale. This means that the terminology of the retail industry is changing along with its move to the online world.
