After you've realized all the benefits of choosing a nanny from a nanny agency, you then have the hardship of deciding what type of nanny you need for your children. A live-in nanny has a lot of benefits over someone working part-time, but it can be costly and unnecessary for some. You need to be realistic about your needs and understand that a live-in nanny isn't a replacement for you as a parent.

First you need to assess your needs. You can also talk with your nanny agency to determine what is best for your children. Many nanny agencies offer part-time, full-time, and live-in nannies. If you have older children, a live-in nanny probably isn't necessary. It is probably best to only have the nanny work in the afternoons and evenings when you aren't home. However, if you have an unpredictable schedule (even with older children), you may need a full-time nanny. With newborns and very young children, a full-time nanny is most likely required (especially for babies). Young children will at least be in school for a majority of the day, but for those working long or odd hours, you'll need a nanny to get the kids to and from school.

Deciding that you actually need a full-time nanny still doesn't answer the question of a live-in nanny though. A live-in nanny is really only necessary for parents who are rarely home, whether it is because of frequent business trips or because their job demands long hours. Besides paying the nanny's salary, you must also be prepared to offer the nanny room and board. You need to be able to provide adequate living space and give her privacy. Although she is working for you around the clock, she still needs to have days off and vacation time. You cannot expect her to be there all the time for you just because she is living in your home. Just like you enjoy time away from your family, she will want time away too.

An advantage of a live-in nanny is that she may also take care of errands and chores around the house. However, don't assume that she will be willing to do these tasks. It's important to speak with her first and set boundaries. A nanny is not a maid, but she might be fine with doing some light chores. Because she'll be spending most of her time at your home, it's important to find one that not only gets along with your children, but you. After many years, a nanny will feel more like a member of your family rather than the "hired help." She can easily become a lifelong friend and have a significant impact on the lives of your family.

A live-in nanny is not just a "luxury" for the wealthy. Today, families from all different income levels have live-in nannies. A lot of times single parents need to have a live-in nanny to support their families. When you've realized that a live-in nanny is the best solution for you, choose a nanny agency that can provide you with an expert in childcare services.
