There are a lot of different ways you can use all those plastic bags you have lying around — here are some of them:

1. Protecting your garden. If you grow fruits or vegetables, eventually they're going to start attracting bugs and animals. Wrap up those tomatoes and strawberries in plastic bags to keep the critters out!

2. Speaking of gardening, be sure to keep a pair of plastic bags handy to use as knee covers. You can tie one around each knee when you're getting ready to putter around in the dirt and soil and want to keep your pants clean. (This is also a good trick if you have to change a tire.)

3. Sealing paint cans. Before putting the lid back on a paint can, stretch a plastic bag over the top. This will keep flakes from the lid from falling in the next time you open it.

4. Protecting the floor from paint. You can use newspaper, sure, but if you have 100+ plastic bags lying around, cut them at the seams and lay them out on the edges of the floor.

5. Protecting your car's side-view mirrors. If snow or sleet is on the way, tie a plastic bag around each of the mirrors — it will keep them from getting icy, and once the storm's over you can just pull of the bags and be on your way.

6. Making a pet bed. Take an old pillowcase and stuff it with plastic bags and old fabric scraps, then sew the open end. Instant lounger for your pup or kitty!

7. As gloves. If you have to do something gross (gutting out a turkey for Thanksgiving, scrubbing a toilet, etc.) but don't have rubber gloves handy, slip some plastic bags over your hands to keep them clean during the dirty work.

8. As rain hats. Most people just grab one and throw it over their hair when it starts raining, but why not make one beforehand? Then you can fashion it however you want and still look stylish as you hurry through the rain!

9. For crafts. There are a lot of craft projects you can do with plastic bags. You can fuse a bunch of them together and make a sort of fabric, out of which you can make just about anything, like a raincoat or a purse. You can also cut them into strips and bind them together to make plastic bag yarn.

10. As packing material. Go ahead and forsake packing peanuts — they're the worst. They stick to EVERYTHING and are choking hazards for kids and pets. Ball up plastic bags and use them to protect any fragile packages instead.

11. As cookbook covers. It's hard not to spill food on your cookbooks at some point — and who can stop grease spatters? Fashion covers for your cookbooks so they'll stay nice and clean.

Those uses are just the tip of the iceberg — it'll be hard to find a reason to throw out your plastic bags now!
